Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward for resolving conflicts during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The two leaders exchanged views on key regional and global developments, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said these conflicts had affected maritime trade as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers.
Modi reiterated that India was ready to contribute to peace efforts, the MEA said.
The meeting marked the second interaction between Modi and Putin this year. The two leaders had earlier met on the margins of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek on August 31. They shared a warm hug before beginning Friday’s talks.
According to the MEA, the leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people ties.
They welcomed Russia’s International Industrial Exhibition, INNOPROM India, which was held in India for the first time from September 9 to 11, and highlighted its potential to further expand bilateral trade and industrial cooperation. Modi and Putin also visited the exhibition and interacted with participants.
The two leaders discussed India-Russia cooperation in multilateral forums, particularly BRICS under India’s 2026 chairship. They also agreed to maintain engagement to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which the MEA said has continued to grow despite geopolitical uncertainties.
Putin invited Modi to Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. Modi accepted the invitation, with the dates to be finalised through diplomatic channels according to mutual convenience.
At the beginning of the meeting, Modi presented Putin with a Russian translation of Thirukkural, the classical work of Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar.
“Presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, which carries the eternal wisdom of the great Thiruvalluvar across languages and borders,” Modi posted on X.
Before the Bishkek meeting, Modi and Putin had met in New Delhi for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in December 2025.
