Faridkot Lok Sabha MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa on Thursday reviewed the progress of various development and public welfare schemes being implemented in Moga district and directed officials to ensure that government benefits reach every eligible and needy person in a transparent and effective manner.
The review was conducted during a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA), chaired by Khalsa. Officials from different departments briefed the MP on the progress of schemes and development works under their respective departments.
Khalsa gave particular attention to programmes concerning children, women and economically weaker sections. He directed officials to strengthen ground-level monitoring of schemes related to children’s education, health and nutrition, women’s empowerment, housing, employment and financial assistance for vulnerable sections.
He also stressed that development projects must meet quality standards, remain transparent and be completed within stipulated timelines. The MP said the objective of government schemes could be achieved only when their benefits reach the last and most needy sections of society.
Reviewing arrangements to protect residents of the Dharamkot subdivision from flooding, Khalsa directed officials to complete flood-control measures on a war footing to safeguard people and their property during the monsoon.
On MP-LAD funds, he called for their transparent and complete utilisation in the public interest and directed officials to undertake development works according to local requirements. He also emphasised more effective implementation of schemes aimed at women’s empowerment and increasing employment opportunities in rural areas.
Deputy Commissioner Sagar Setia informed the meeting that around Rs 55 crore had been spent under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Moga district during the current financial year. More than 10 lakh labourers had been provided employment opportunities under the scheme, with payments of around Rs 36 crore made to them.
Setia said MGNREGS had also supported village development works and the construction of several sports stadiums, strengthening rural sports infrastructure and encouraging youth participation in sports.
He further informed the meeting that self-help groups in the district had received assistance of around Rs 86 lakh. Loans at affordable rates were also being provided to women and other beneficiaries to help them start self-employment ventures.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Jaspinder Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Kulpreet Singh and officials of various departments attended the meeting.
