The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named former IAS officer Debasish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam, scheduled for October 6.
The party announced Sharma’s candidature in an official communication issued by its central headquarters in New Delhi and signed by BJP Assam in-charge Tarun Chugh.
Sharma, a former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner, took voluntary retirement from government service earlier this month and joined the BJP on September 9. His entry into the party had immediately triggered speculation that he could be fielded from Nagaon.
The Congress had approached the Election Commission with a formal complaint against Sharma, raising allegations concerning administrative irregularities and questions over his political ambitions ahead of the bypoll.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party in March and subsequently joined the BJP. Bordoloi later contested the Assam Assembly election from Dispur and won the seat, necessitating the Lok Sabha by-election.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for October 6, with counting of votes to take place on October 9. The last date for filing nominations is September 16.
Sharma’s candidature adds an administrative dimension to the contest, given his previous association with Nagaon as Deputy Commissioner. The BJP is seeking to build on its organisational expansion in Assam and the political shift triggered by Bordoloi’s move.
For the Congress, the bypoll is an important test as it seeks to retain the constituency, which it won in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
With the nomination deadline approaching, the Nagaon contest is shaping up as a closely watched electoral battle in Assam.
