The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has strongly condemned the Pakistan government for allegedly stopping a group of 104 Sikh pilgrims from travelling to India for pilgrimage at the last moment.
In a statement issued on Thursday, DSGMC president S. Harmeet Singh Kalka and general secretary S. Jagdeep Singh Kahlon said the pilgrims, who are based in Pakistan, had been granted Indian visas to visit Sikh shrines in India. They were scheduled to travel by air and arrive at Delhi International Airport before proceeding to Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar and Gurdwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib.
The committee leaders said the DSGMC had made comprehensive arrangements for the pilgrims, including receiving them at Delhi airport as well as accommodation and travel arrangements for their pilgrimage.
According to Kalka and Kahlon, Pakistani authorities sought an NOC from the pilgrims immediately before boarding, preventing them from travelling. The DSGMC leaders said pilgrims holding valid Indian visas should not require such an NOC and described the alleged action as highly condemnable.
The committee also said attempts were made to contact Pakistan minister Ramesh Arora regarding the matter, but no response was received. DSGMC foreign tours in-charge S. Paramjit Singh Chandhok also reportedly attempted to establish contact with the minister but received no response.
The DSGMC leaders appealed to the Pakistan government to reconsider its decision and urged the Indian government to take note of what they described as the treatment meted out to Sikh pilgrims.
