The Centre, in consultation with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh, has identified 28 geographical places and features in the region by their standardised names on the official map of the Survey of India (SoI), aiming to establish accurate geographical references and improve public awareness.
“Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh, has identified a total of twenty-eight (28) places/features, located in the UT of Ladakh, by standard place and feature names on the official map of the Survey of India (SoI),” an official statement said.
The statement added that formally identifying these locations on the Survey of India map of Ladakh would facilitate their accurate recognition and improve awareness among the public.
The 28 identified places and geographical features include Atisha Giri Peak, Brangsa Land area, Chapchingal, Kanishka Peak, Karun Pir Mountain, Kuksel Land area, Martand Gir Peak, Parpik Glacier, Skamri Glacier, Shachmirk Pass, Shkorga Valley, Zorawar Peak, Dehra Compass Land area, Drak Karpo Mountain, Gogra Land area, Jolmori Mountain, Kumarayana Point Land area, Panglung Land area, Rinchen Zangpo Peak, Sakyasri Giri Peak, Guru Rinpoche Lake, Shamal Lungpa Land area, River, Hot Spring Water body, Marpa Lotsava Ri Peak, Milarepa Kangri Peak and Maheshvara Ri Peak.
Standardising geographical names on official Survey of India maps carries administrative, strategic and legal significance. It establishes uniform names for geographical features such as mountains, passes, rivers, glaciers and land areas, helping prevent confusion arising from different local names or duplicate references.
Official identification of geographical features also provides a formal cartographic record in areas where territorial and diplomatic claims may be contested, including border regions such as Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, where China has undertaken its own naming exercises.
In sensitive border areas and locations of military friction, including Gogra, Hot Spring and Dehra Compass in eastern Ladakh, official mapping provides geographical reference points for defence, patrolling and administration.
Survey of India maps also serve as baseline data for government agencies involved in district planning, disaster management, census operations and infrastructure development.
The standardisation is also intended to provide citizens, researchers and tourists with access to authentic and officially recognised geographical and topographical information about the region.
