The Congress-led ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ (Save the Vote, Save the Nation) campaign began nationwide on Friday, with INDIA bloc parties and leaders joining efforts to raise concerns over citizens’ voting rights and the country’s democratic process, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal said.

Speaking to the media in Adoor, Kerala, Venugopal described the campaign as a major political movement against what he alleged were attempts to undermine democracy and deprive citizens of their right to vote. He said the campaign would continue until October 8, mobilising political parties and leaders around these concerns.

Venugopal criticised the Election Commission, alleging that its actions were undermining democratic processes. Referring to 14 letters written by two Election Commissioners, he claimed that issues raised in the communications had been ignored. He also questioned the Commission’s functioning and said the campaign sought accountability from those he accused of weakening democratic institutions.

The Congress leader also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling on them to answer to the public over what he described as threats to citizens’ voting rights.

As part of the campaign, INDIA bloc MPs will lead a march in New Delhi on October 6, Venugopal said. He added that leaders would court arrest and that the agitation would be intensified through further protests.

Venugopal called for democratic and opposition forces to unite, saying the campaign aimed to build collective action around the protection of voting rights and democratic institutions.

Referring to Congress-led protests in Kerala, he said party workers had continued their demonstrations despite what he described as government persecution. He cited protests involving the display of black flags against Amit Shah as an example of the party’s mobilisation in difficult circumstances.

“The priority of all of us should be to fight together against such major threats,” Venugopal said, emphasising the importance of collective action on issues concerning citizens’ voting rights.

He said the campaign would take these concerns directly to the public and seek wider support for protecting democracy and the right to vote. The October 6 march in Delhi, followed by further protests and planned arrests of leaders, will form part of the campaign’s activities, he added.
