Nearly 120 swine flu cases have been reported in Gautam Buddha Nagar, prompting the Health Department to step up surveillance and strengthen preparedness across hospitals and health centres. Authorities have also prepared a 20-bed ICU equipped with ventilators for critically ill patients.
The department has issued an advisory urging residents to avoid crowded places, maintain personal hygiene and cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing. People have also been advised not to take medicines without consulting a qualified doctor.
Hospitals and health centres across the district have been placed on alert amid changing weather conditions and an increase in viral infections. Arrangements are being strengthened for the identification, testing and treatment of suspected swine flu cases, while essential medicines have been made available at health centres.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Madan Mohan Mani Tripathi appealed to residents not to panic and urged those experiencing symptoms associated with swine flu to seek medical advice promptly.
Symptoms including cough, sore throat, fever, body aches, weakness and difficulty in breathing should not be ignored, officials said. Elderly people, young children and those with pre-existing health conditions have been advised to take additional precautions.
The advisory also calls for regular handwashing with soap and water and avoiding close contact with people showing symptoms of infection. Residents have been advised to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and limit unnecessary visits to crowded places, particularly when experiencing symptoms.
Health officials have specifically cautioned against self-medication. Residents developing fever, cold or other symptoms have been advised to consult a doctor before starting any treatment.
The department said timely identification and treatment can help prevent the illness from developing into a serious condition, while medical facilities, medicines and other resources continue to be monitored across the district.
