India’s Kokila won the silver medal in the women’s J2 -52kg judo event at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday after losing to Kyrgyzstan’s Aibike Ulanbek Kyzy in the gold-medal bout.
Ulanbek Kyzy defeated the Indian judoka by ippon in just 21 seconds at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall to claim the gold medal.
Kokila entered the final after an impressive semifinal victory over China’s reigning world champion Yi Liu, securing India a place on the podium. However, she was unable to reproduce that performance in the title clash, as the Kyrgyz judoka delivered a decisive finish early in the contest.
Despite the final defeat, Kokila’s silver medal marks a significant achievement for Indian para-judo and improves on her bronze-medal finish in the women’s -48kg category at the previous Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. Competing in the -52kg division this time, she progressed to the final and secured a second continental medal.
Her semifinal victory over Liu was one of the highlights of her campaign. Kokila prevailed in a closely contested bout, scoring a waza-ari and a yuko against her Chinese opponent. Liu also registered a waza-ari, while Kokila received a shido penalty for a minor rule infringement during the contest.
The victory set up a gold-medal clash against Ulanbek Kyzy, but the Kyrgyz judoka proved too strong, ending the bout with an ippon after only 21 seconds.
Kokila, a visually impaired judoka from Haryana’s Jind district, represented India at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. She competes in the J2 classification, which includes judokas with varying degrees of visual impairment.
Her performance in Aichi-Nagoya adds another continental medal to her international record and highlights her progress since the previous edition of the Games.
Although the gold medal eluded her, Kokila’s run to the final against a competitive international field marks an encouraging achievement for Indian para-judo.
