West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew was taken to hospital for an X-ray after injuring his finger while taking the catch of Naman Dhir during the third ODI against India at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday.
The injury occurred on the final ball of the 36th over of India’s innings when Dhir chipped a delivery from left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie towards cover. Andrew, positioned in the area, completed the catch to break a threatening 65-run partnership. Dhir departed for a quickfire 30 off 21 balls, including three fours and two sixes.
However, Andrew sustained a blow to his finger while completing the catch and was forced to leave the field for medical attention and further assessment.
Cricket West Indies confirmed that Andrew had been taken to hospital for an X-ray and would be unavailable to open the innings during the team’s chase of 352 runs. Captain Shai Hope was named to partner John Campbell at the top of the order.
“Jewel Andrew has gone to hospital for an X-ray after sustaining a blow to his finger while taking the catch to dismiss Naman Dhir during the Indian innings. Andrew was originally scheduled to open the innings. Captain Shai Hope will now partner John Campbell at the top of the order,” Cricket West Indies said in a medical update.
The change means Campbell will have his third opening partner in the series. West Indies also faced concerns over wrist-spinner Vitel Lawes, who conceded 54 runs in five overs before leaving the field with a left calf problem.
Earlier, India posted 351/7, powered by KL Rahul’s unbeaten 129 off 87 balls, his career-best score in the format. Rohit Sharma contributed 92, while Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 57. India had been reduced to 4/2 inside the first three overs by Jayden Seales before the middle order rebuilt the innings.
