The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed immediate action against the sale of a Nestle dairy product after a laboratory analysis found a sample collected from The Lalit hotel to be “unsafe” and “substandard”.
The food regulator said on Saturday that the sample of Nestle Low Fat Dairy Whitener was collected from the premises of The Lalit in New Delhi and subsequently tested by a Food Analyst laboratory.
According to FSSAI, the laboratory report found that the product did not comply with provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and classified the sample as both unsafe and substandard.
Following the laboratory findings, FSSAI issued a notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd., the operator of The Lalit, regarding the non-compliant product manufactured by Nestle.
The regulator said a copy of the laboratory analysis report had also been provided to the food business operator for necessary action. Bharat Hotels has been given an opportunity to challenge the findings and file an appeal against the Food Analyst’s report within the prescribed period under food safety regulations.
Pending further proceedings, FSSAI directed the food business operator to immediately stop the sale of the identified product.
The action comes amid ongoing enforcement measures by the food regulator to monitor compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
Earlier this month, FSSAI suspended the licences of TCF Chocolates and Gifts and Shivam Agro following inspections that reportedly found food safety and hygiene violations at their facilities.
The action against TCF Chocolates and Gifts followed a consumer complaint concerning food ordered through an e-commerce platform, after which the regulator conducted an inspection of the facility.
