West Bengal Police have arrested two Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly entered India by swimming across the international border and took shelter at a house in Murshidabad district, officials said on Sunday.
The two men, identified as Dulal and Rashidul Islam, are residents of Bangladesh’s Chapai Nawabganj district. They were arrested during a police raid at a residence in Ramnagar village under Lalgola Police Station following a tip-off about their presence in the area.
According to police, the duo allegedly chose the water route to cross the international border to avoid detection by the Border Security Force (BSF), which maintains security along the land stretches of the border.
Police said the two men were unable to produce valid documents authorising their stay in India. During questioning, they allegedly admitted to entering the country illegally.
Investigators are questioning the two about the circumstances that led them to cross the border by swimming. Police are also examining whether they have any links with insurgent groups or whether there was a broader conspiracy behind their entry into India, the official said.
In a separate case in the same district, police arrested another Bangladeshi national who allegedly lived in West Bengal for about 15 years using identity documents obtained by falsely presenting his father-in-law as his father.
The man, identified as Johad Sheikh, is originally from Shemaiah in Bangladesh and had married a local woman after entering India. Police said he subsequently obtained a voter identity card and Aadhaar card using his father-in-law’s identity details.
Sheikh’s name was deleted from the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Subsequent police investigation allegedly established that he was a Bangladeshi national.
Ranitala Police arrested Sheikh late on Saturday after he had allegedly remained absconding for a prolonged period. He was sent to a holding centre on Sunday.
