At least 27 people were killed and 26 others injured in two separate shooting incidents in South Africa over the weekend, with police searching for suspects in both cases.
In Lwandle, at least 10 people were killed and 11 injured after armed men opened fire on people at an entertainment venue shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, according to South African media reports.
The South African Police Service said five victims died at the scene, while five others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital. Eleven injured people were also hospitalised for treatment.
Lwandle police have opened murder and attempted murder cases as investigations continue.
In a separate attack at a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville in Gauteng province, 17 people were killed and 15 others seriously injured on Saturday night.
The shooting took place at around 9.30 p.m. when patrons were drinking inside and outside the tavern. According to Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the suspects first opened fire on people outside before entering the tavern and continuing to shoot at those inside.
The attackers were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and handguns. Police said they allegedly searched victims for mobile phones and other valuables before fleeing in two vehicles. They also allegedly set fire to two vehicles parked near the tavern.
Emergency responders reported that all 17 victims in the Gauteng attack died at the scene, while the injured were taken to hospitals.
Police are searching for at least eight suspects in connection with the Wedela shooting. Sibeko said the motive remained unknown and that detectives and specialised police units had been deployed to identify and arrest those responsible.
The two incidents have renewed concerns over gun violence in South Africa, where shootings at entertainment venues and other public places have repeatedly resulted in multiple casualties.
