Virat Kohli on Sunday became only the second batter in men’s ODI history to reach 15,000 runs, joining Sachin Tendulkar in the elite club during India’s first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
Kohli reached the landmark in the 29th over of India’s chase of 296 when he pulled a short delivery from Alzarri Joseph towards deep midwicket for a boundary. The Greenfield International Stadium crowd rose to applaud the India batter, who acknowledged the ovation before exchanging gloves with ODI captain Shubman Gill and sharing a hug.
The 37-year-old reached 15,000 ODI runs in his 303rd innings, making him the fastest batter to the milestone. Tendulkar had taken 377 innings to reach the mark.
Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in ODI cricket with 18,426 runs, while Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara is third on the all-time list with 14,234. Ricky Ponting and Sanath Jayasuriya complete the top five.
Kohli has consistently set records for reaching ODI run milestones quickly. He became the fastest to 10,000 runs in 2018, achieving the feat in 205 innings, and also holds the fastest marks for reaching 8,000, 9,000, 11,000, 12,000, 13,000 and 14,000 ODI runs.
The latest landmark adds to Kohli’s record-breaking ODI career. In the 2023 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, he scored his 50th ODI century to move past Tendulkar’s previous record of 49 hundreds.
Kohli now has 54 ODI centuries, the most by any batter in a single international format. His latest milestone came as India continued their chase against the West Indies in the series opener.
