An Assistant Sub-Inspector was seriously injured after suspected miscreants allegedly hurled crude bombs at a police team during a raid on an illegal gambling den in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, police said on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Salar police station, led by ASI Sadiq Ali, conducted the raid late on Sunday night. Police said the suspected attackers launched the bomb assault after spotting the personnel.
Ali sustained serious injuries, while several other police officers suffered minor injuries in the attack.
The explosions triggered panic in Kharera village, with witnesses reporting that multiple crude bombs were hurled at the police team in quick succession. The attackers allegedly fled from the spot after the assault.
Additional police forces were rushed to the area following the incident. The injured personnel were initially taken to Salar Rural Hospital. As Ali’s condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Police sources described his condition as serious.
Tension continued in the area following the attack, prompting the deployment of police personnel and Rapid Action Force (RAF) teams in and around Kharera village to maintain law and order.
No arrests have been made so far, although several suspects have been detained for questioning. Investigators are probing the illegal gambling operation, identifying those allegedly involved in the attack and tracing the source of the explosives used in the assault.
A senior Murshidabad Police District officer said CCTV footage from nearby locations was being examined to identify the attackers and track their movements.
“It is being investigated whether an organised gang was operating in the area and was behind the attack on the police team. The investigation is underway,” the officer said.
