Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud has been withdrawn by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from his remaining County Championship commitments with Kent as the national team prepares for a packed international schedule.
The decision is a setback for Kent’s promotion hopes, with Mahmud having played a key role in the club’s rise to third place in Division Two. The pacer has been in outstanding form, claiming seven-wicket match hauls in each of his last two games and taking 26 wickets in four County Championship appearances.
Kent confirmed that Mahmud will return to Bangladesh ahead of the team’s winter assignments against Afghanistan, the West Indies and South Africa.
“Kent Cricket can confirm that after discussions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Hasan Mahmud will return to Bangladesh ahead of their Winter schedule of multiple series against Afghanistan, West Indies and South Africa,” the club said.
Mahmud will miss Kent’s final two matches of the campaign as he is set to participate in the Asian Games before Bangladesh’s Test series against Afghanistan and the West Indies, followed by an all-format series against South Africa.
Kent Director of Cricket Simon Cook said the club was disappointed to lose Mahmud during the County Championship run-in but respected the BCB’s decision following discussions between the two sides.
“Whilst he will be a big miss, both of our other overseas bowlers, Keith Dudgeon and Khaled Ahmed, remain available for these last two matches of the Summer,” Cook said.
Kent also thanked Mahmud for his contributions across the County Championship and Vitality Blast this season. The club said he had taken 30 wickets in seven appearances across the two competitions and would always be welcome back at Kent.
Mahmud was also a key contributor to Bangladesh’s historic victory over Australia in Darwin last month.
