Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to legendary Assamese singer-composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary, recalling his contribution in taking the spirit and cultural identity of Assam and the Northeast to audiences across the country.
Born on September 8, 1926, Hazarika, popularly known as ‘Sudhakantha’ and the Bard of the Brahmaputra, left a lasting musical legacy that brought together Assamese folk traditions and universal themes of humanity, justice, unity and social consciousness.
Taking to X, PM Modi remembered Hazarika and said his voice had carried the soul of Assam and the spirit of the Northeast to the entire nation.
“Through his music, he beautifully gave expression to the thoughts and spirit of countless people. His songs brought people closer,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also recalled attending the launch of Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations in Guwahati last year, adding that the legendary musician’s life and work would continue to inspire generations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to Hazarika, saying his music had taken Assamese culture to the world stage in all its diversity.
“Bhupenda’s music carried Assamese culture onto the world stage in all its diversity, and his lyrics mirrored the ethos that has kept society united through the ages. His immortal legacy will continue to inspire our vision of nation-building,” Shah posted on X.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda described Hazarika as a legendary musician, poet and cultural icon who showcased Assam’s rich heritage through his work.
“Heartfelt tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his birth anniversary,” Nadda said, adding that his contribution to art and culture would always be remembered.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called Hazarika a “towering cultural icon” and a “visionary” who gave voice to Assam’s soul while enriching India’s cultural heritage through music and humanism.
Singh said Hazarika’s timeless compositions reflected compassion, harmony and social justice and continued to resonate with generations across the country.
He also highlighted the enduring power of Hazarika’s artistic legacy to bring people together and transcend boundaries.
