Days after a multi-storey building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan claimed seven lives, residents and students in the area have demanded strict action against what they described as “PG mafias”, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated action against a building adjoining the collapsed structure after declaring it dangerous.
Speaking to IANS, undergraduate student Ayush said the authorities should have taken preventive action earlier, pointing out that a notice had allegedly been issued to the PG accommodation a month before the tragedy.
“MCD should have undertaken such precautions earlier. Despite a notice being issued a month back, the PG kept on functioning, and no action was taken against them,” he said.
Ayush alleged that authorities tend to act only after a tragedy occurs. He also criticised politicians for allegedly pursuing their own interests and sought the resignation of the MCD Commissioner.
“Strict action should be taken against the ‘PG Mafias’,” he said.
He added that a single bed in PG accommodations in the area costs between Rs 12,000 and Rs 14,000, despite what he described as a lack of basic facilities. He also urged the government and colleges to provide hostel accommodation for students.
Priyanka, a local resident, called for the demolition of all “dilapidated buildings” in the area, warning that another incident could result in further loss of life.
“If another incident takes place, it will again lead to loss of lives as tragedy can happen anytime,” she said, adding that several hotels in the area were also allegedly in poor condition.
Priyanka further questioned the government’s arrangements for students who have been leaving PG accommodations following the collapse. She said some students had taken shelter at gurdwaras, where they were also being provided food, and questioned why the government had not stepped forward to assist them.
Pradeep, a salesman, said he was returning from the area after the stationery shop where he delivered goods had remained closed since the building collapsed on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested PG operator Sudhanshu in connection with the building collapse. With his arrest, the total number of arrests in the case has risen to five.
