At least one person was killed and several others injured after an oxygen cylinder exploded in southeast Delhi’s Okhla area on Wednesday, officials said.
The blast was reported at around 11 a.m., following which three fire tenders and a multi-casualty response vehicle were rushed to the spot.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred while oxygen cylinders were being unloaded from a vehicle.
An eyewitness, Saud, said the incident took place at around 10 a.m. and that one person died at the spot. He said around three to four other people were injured.
Another eyewitness, Kurshid Alam, said the cylinders were used with cutter machines at a factory in the area and that the blast occurred while they were being unloaded.
Alam said people within a radius of around 100 metres also sustained injuries in the explosion.
The injured were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Further details about the victims and the circumstances leading to the blast were awaited.
The incident comes a month after a separate cylinder explosion at a CNG fuel station near Tikri Kalan Metro Station in Outer Delhi left three people dead and six injured.
The earlier blast occurred after a CNG cylinder of a truck exploded at the fuel station. Delhi Police had identified two of the deceased as 25-year-old Manish, a resident of Baba Haridas Colony in West Delhi, and 32-year-old Sunny Nizampur. The identity of the third deceased was not known at the time, though police said all three were employees of the CNG pump.
According to the Delhi Fire Services, the six injured people had been standing nearby when the explosion occurred. Six fire tenders were dispatched after the DFS received the emergency call at around 3:37 p.m.
Large teams of police and fire personnel were deployed at the site following the incident.
