A leopard entered Kota’s Chhatra Vilas Garden, popularly known as CB Garden, early Tuesday morning, triggering panic among visitors and morning walkers before climbing a nearly 40-foot Jamun tree, where it remained as Forest Department teams worked to rescue it safely.
The leopard was spotted in the garden at around 6 a.m., when nearly 200 people were reportedly present for morning walks, yoga and exercise. Officials immediately evacuated the visitors and closed the garden gates.
Police and Rajasthan Armed Constabulary personnel were deployed around the area, while members of the public were advised against entering the garden.
A Forest Department rescue team reached the spot soon after receiving information about the animal. Veterinary doctor Akhilesh Pandey made two attempts to tranquillise the leopard from the ground, but both darting attempts missed.
Officials initially brought a small crane to help veterinarians get closer to the animal. However, the height and position of the tree made it difficult to obtain an accurate shot, prompting authorities to bring a larger crane to the garden at around 9 a.m.
The larger crane is being positioned according to the height of the tree so that veterinarians can make another attempt to tranquillise the leopard.
As a safety measure, a net has been placed beneath the tree. Forest personnel have also strengthened other safety arrangements around the site, while a cage has been ordered for the rescue operation.
Officials said that once the leopard is successfully tranquillised, the team will wait for around 30 minutes for the sedative to take effect before attempting to bring the animal down safely.
A 25-member rescue team, including senior Forest Department officials, has been deployed at the site. DFO Pramod Dhakad said two veterinary doctors were also present, along with the Chief Conservator of Forests and two Assistant Conservators of Forests.
“Upon receiving the information, the rescue team immediately reached CB Garden. The leopard has been spotted sitting on a tree, and efforts are underway to capture it safely,” Dhakad said.
The incident comes amid reports of repeated leopard sightings in and around Kota. The animal had earlier reportedly been spotted near the Army area on Mall Road and close to the Health Department office.
The Forest Department had previously placed a cage in an attempt to capture the leopard, but the animal was not trapped.
Officials said the leopard has not attacked anyone so far. The rescue operation remains underway, with teams preparing for another attempt to tranquillise and safely capture the animal.
