Actress Tanushree Dutta has questioned the practice of automatically trusting or respecting people in Bollywood because of their age or status as industry “veterans”, saying that a person’s character should determine the respect they receive.
The Aashiq Banaya Aapne actress shared a video on Monday reflecting on her experiences in the film industry and the lessons she learnt during her career. She said her perspective had changed over the years and advised people not to place their trust in someone simply because they are older.
“Never trust a person just for their age,” Dutta said, adding that she now judges people by their character rather than their age.
Reflecting on the peak of her career, Dutta said she had been a major star, even if she was not the industry’s number one or a “super duper star”. She also challenged the conventional understanding of seniority in Bollywood, saying that an actor’s standing often depends on the success of their films and their popularity.
“There is no senior in Bollywood by age. The one whose stars are high is a senior. The one whose movie is getting a hit is a star,” she said.
Dutta also recalled an incident on a film set where she claimed several people joined together and made her a “scapegoat”, despite her being the biggest star on the set at the time. Looking back, she said she lacked the street-smart understanding needed to navigate the industry during her early years of success.
In the caption accompanying her video, Dutta elaborated on her views about the term “veteran”. She said she had initially assumed that an older actor who was not receiving work might need help, but later came to view some veterans as experienced players capable of manipulating the media and public to conceal what she described as their “real character”.
She urged people to look beyond age, appearance and background and assess individuals on their character. She also alleged that some older people with “dark and nefarious intentions” towards youngsters could seek to undermine them.
Dutta concluded by saying that her experiences had taught her to give respect according to a person’s character, rather than their age.
