The women’s cricket ecosystem in Delhi is expanding rapidly, with the Delhi Premier League (DPL) emerging as an important platform for players to gain competitive exposure and progress to higher levels, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) President Rohan Jaitley said as the third season of the Women’s DPL got underway.
The league’s growth is reflected in the widening talent pool. When the Women’s DPL was launched, around 80 players registered for the auction, with 78 required to fill the four squads. Three seasons later, Delhi’s domestic women’s cricket structure has expanded to 48 club teams and a database of more than 700 players.
“The most encouraging aspect for us is that the growth of women’s cricket in Delhi is not limited to numbers,” Jaitley said. He added that the objective was to create regular opportunities for competitive cricket and provide players with a platform to showcase their ability.
The DDCA Women’s League forms an important part of that pathway. Players who perform consistently are shortlisted for the DPL auction, giving emerging cricketers an opportunity to move into franchise-level competition.
DDCA Vice President Shikha Kumar said the system was creating a clearer route for women cricketers to progress, while Secretary Ashok Sharma stressed the importance of strengthening opportunities at every stage of the development pathway.
The impact is also being reflected in performances. Delhi’s senior women recently ended a 14-year wait for silverware by winning the 2025-26 Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy. Delhi’s Under-23 women had also finished runners-up in the 2023-24 Women’s Under-23 T20 Trophy.
Jaitley said such results were the real measure of progress, noting that increased participation must ultimately translate into stronger performances.
The Women’s DPL also provides emerging players exposure to a competitive franchise environment alongside established cricketers. Jaitley said the DDCA would continue expanding the ecosystem so that more Delhi players could aspire to represent the state at the highest level.
The third season of the Women’s DPL began on August 20 and features four teams, with matches scheduled through September 2.
