Actor Harman Singha, who was recently evicted from the reality show ‘The Traitors’, believes reality television continues to remain popular as celebrities increasingly explore the format as another avenue for their careers.
Speaking to IANS after his exit from the show, Harman said reality programmes have maintained their appeal over the years, pointing to long-running formats such as ‘Bigg Boss’.
“Reality shows have never gone out of fashion like ‘Bigg Boss’. There are so many shows that we watch,” he said.
Harman was asked whether celebrities are increasingly entering reality television for the experience itself or primarily to gain visibility.
He said the changing nature of the entertainment industry has also altered how audiences and artists view different forms of storytelling.
“The thing is, I think the lines of what defines an artist have changed. All of those categories are different. You can be a part of all kinds of storytelling,” Harman said, adding that audiences have become much more aware.
The actor also reflected on his experience on ‘The Traitors’ and spoke about his brother, actor and television personality Rannvijay Singha. Harman said he believed Rannvijay could have faced a situation similar to that of fellow contestant Munawar Faruqui had he been on the show.
“Rannvijay would have had the same problem which happened with Munawar. When the opening batsman comes to hit the century on 30 balls, then all the bowlers, all the fielders get scared. That’s what happened,” he said.
Harman revealed that the brothers had discussed the possibility before he entered the show and agreed that their family connection could make him an early target, irrespective of whether he was a traitor or innocent.
He nevertheless admitted that he could have benefited from Rannvijay’s experience in reality television.
“But I wish I had learned something else from my brother because he knows all these things very well. He is very established in reality shows. This was the first experience for me,” Harman said.
