Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party president Kewal Singh Dhillon has strongly criticised the Congress over its decision to sing only two verses of Vande Mataram, describing the move as an insult to the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.
Dhillon said Vande Mataram represented more than a patriotic song and was closely associated with the country’s freedom movement and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters.
He alleged that restricting the number of verses for political considerations reflected what he described as the Congress’s “old politics of vote-bank appeasement”.
According to Dhillon, limiting the song undermined its historical significance and showed disregard for the national sentiments associated with it.
“At a time when there is a need to preserve the historical significance of this song, Congress’s decision goes against the unity and integrity of the country,” he said.
Dhillon maintained that patriots inspired by Vande Mataram had made immense sacrifices for India’s independence and alleged that the Congress decision amounted to disrespecting their contribution.
He said the Punjab BJP would oppose the Congress’s position and take the issue to the people, while seeking to highlight what the party described as the Congress’s politics of appeasement.
