West Bengal campus politics: How regime change has repeatedly fuelled student unrest

New Delhi, August 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The latest protests and vandalism at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University have once again highlighted West Bengal’s long and often volatile relationship between campus politics, ideological shifts and political change.

Clashes between student groups aligned with different political positions have brought the issue back into focus, with rival sides blaming each other for the unrest. But the developments at Jadavpur University are part of a much longer pattern in which universities and colleges in the state have frequently reflected wider political and social shifts.

Campus politics in West Bengal has historically served as a barometer of public discontent and changing political loyalties. Student organisations have often become vehicles for new political ideas, particularly when sections of students and society have grown disillusioned with an established political order.

The unrest, however, has not been driven by ideology alone. Concerns over employment, education reforms and institutional funding have also contributed to student mobilisation. Political parties, meanwhile, have frequently treated educational institutions as extensions of their wider political contests, with student activists sometimes emerging as future party leaders.

The late 1960s and early 1970s marked one of the most turbulent phases, when Naxalite activism drew students into radical politics. Universities and colleges became centres of militant mobilisation, with clashes involving rival groups and police turning campuses into sites of intense ideological conflict.

The political landscape changed significantly after the Communist Party of India-Marxist-led Left Front came to power in 1977. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), associated with the Left, established a strong presence across campuses. Yet Congress-backed student unions retained influence in some institutions into the early 1980s, leading to intense contests for control. Political support for rival student groups was often openly extended by their parent parties, including through manpower and, at times, weapons.

The next major political transition came in 2011, when Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress ended 34 years of Left Front rule. On campuses, the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) sought to displace Left-affiliated student organisations, once again triggering clashes at several universities and colleges.

The recurring pattern has been that political change outside campuses is often followed by attempts to reshape the balance of power within them. Student unions become an important part of that transition, turning educational institutions into contested spaces for competing political visions.

The latest political shift has again brought this dynamic into focus. Students and emerging political activists disillusioned with established parties appear to be seeking another change in the state’s political and intellectual landscape.

The contest, therefore, extends beyond control of student organisations. For political groups, West Bengal’s campuses represent a significant arena for shaping ideological influence and laying claim to what can be described as the state’s intellectual centre.
