India on Monday strongly condemned the defacement of its Embassy premises in Slovenia by what it described as anti-India elements and called on Slovenian authorities to identify and hold those responsible accountable.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said diplomatic premises are protected under international law and that the matter had been taken up with Slovenian authorities in both New Delhi and Ljubljana.
“Under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises are inviolable and must be protected,” the MEA said in a statement.
The Ministry added that it had “taken up the matter strongly with Slovenian authorities” so that those behind the incident were held accountable. It also urged law enforcement agencies to take note of what it described as hateful propaganda and disinformation being circulated by such groups.
The incident comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between India and Slovenia.
Last month, India’s Ambassador to Slovenia, Amit Narang, met Slovenian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tone Kajzer in Ljubljana. According to the Indian Embassy, Narang conveyed a personal congratulatory letter from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Kajzer and held discussions on measures to further develop bilateral relations into a mutually beneficial partnership.
India and Slovenia have also reaffirmed cooperation on issues of mutual interest. On June 24, MEA Secretary (West) Ambassador Sibi George represented India at Slovenia’s National Day celebrations at the Slovenian Embassy in New Delhi.
The MEA said George reaffirmed India’s commitment to the longstanding bilateral partnership and to expanding cooperation in new areas. He also appreciated Slovenia’s support for India’s efforts against cross-border terrorism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on May 28 congratulated Janez Jansa on his election as Slovenia’s Prime Minister and said India was ready to work closely with his government to strengthen bilateral ties for the shared prosperity and mutual benefit of the two countries.
