The Ranchi Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested Arun Kumar, director of the agency entrusted with conducting the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) Junior Engineer (Diploma) Competitive Examination, 2022, in connection with the alleged paper leak, officials said on Tuesday.
Kumar was arrested in Mumbai after the investigation reportedly uncovered evidence pointing to the involvement of the examination agency and its operators in the leak.
The JSSC examination was held on July 3, 2022, for recruitment to 1,279 Junior Engineer (Diploma) posts. The examination was subsequently cancelled after the answer key for the first shift allegedly went viral and reports emerged that the question paper had been leaked before the test began.
An FIR was registered at Namkum police station on July 14, 2022, on a complaint by candidate Mithlesh Kumar Mahto. The case was registered under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act and the Bihar Examination Conduct Act. A Special Investigation Team was subsequently constituted to probe the matter.
During the investigation, police established that the question paper had been leaked and found that Delhi-based Bynisys Technology Private Limited had been entrusted with conducting the examination.
Investigators also uncovered an alleged syndicate that arranged advance access to answers for candidates in Patna, enabling them to memorise the answers before appearing for the examination.
Police said the probe subsequently indicated the alleged involvement of the examination agency and its operators in the conspiracy. Acting on intelligence inputs that Kumar was hiding in Mumbai, a Ranchi Police team conducted a raid and arrested him.
Several other accused have already been arrested, including candidate and alleged prime accused Ranjit Mandal, syndicate members Deepak Kumar, Abhishek Kumar and Deepak Srivastava, and the examination agency’s senior manager Krishna Kumar. They have been remanded to judicial custody.
Kumar, the latest accused to be arrested, is a resident of Khokhuna village under Chiksaura police station in Bihar’s Nalanda district.
Police said several other suspects remain absconding and raids are being conducted at multiple locations to arrest them.
