Three migrant labourers from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district were killed after lightning struck a paddy field in Nawada’s Rajauli area on Tuesday, officials said.
The deceased were relatives — an uncle and his two nephews — who had travelled to Nawada along with other labourers in search of seasonal agricultural work during the paddy transplantation season.
The incident occurred in Dariyapur village under Amawan West Panchayat. A group of 12 labourers from Sitamarhi had come to the Rajauli area for work. While some were engaged in paddy transplantation in nearby Raja Bigha village, four labourers were working in the field of local farmer Manoj Yadav in Dariyapur.
According to preliminary information, dark clouds gathered over the area before lightning struck the field amid heavy thunder. Three labourers died on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Mani Manjhi, 60, Rajendra Manjhi, 20, son of Rampreet Manjhi, and Indrajit Manjhi, 18, son of Indal Manjhi. All three belonged to Madheshra village in Sitamarhi and were related.
Another labourer, Raghuvir Kumar, son of Ashok Manjhi and also a resident of Madheshra, was present at the site but survived the lightning strike.
The incident triggered panic among villagers, who rushed to the spot and informed the police and block administration. Two ambulances subsequently reached the village, and the bodies were taken for necessary formalities and post-mortem examination.
The deaths have left the victims’ families and fellow labourers in mourning. The workers had travelled to Nawada seeking seasonal employment to support their families.
The state government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
