External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday expressed condolences to Colombia over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by a powerful earthquake and said India was ready to extend all possible assistance.
In a message addressed to Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar, Jaishankar said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and conveyed his sympathies to families who lost loved ones.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives and the destruction caused by the earthquake in Colombia. Extend heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. Also pray for the swift recovery to those injured. India stands ready to extend all possible assistance,” Jaishankar posted on X.
The death toll from the magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday rose to 132, while more than 570 people were injured, according to the latest update from the Colombian government.
The earthquake damaged 1,575 homes and disrupted operations at six airports, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said in Bogota. Commercial flight operations at the affected airports have been suspended.
The Colombian government declared a state of national disaster on Monday to facilitate the emergency response.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, the earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicentre near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco department. The quake occurred at a depth of 96 km.
Authorities have been coordinating with officials in affected departments and local administrations to assess the damage and identify urgent relief requirements.
President Espriella said he had taken charge of the emergency response in San Jose del Palmar and ordered the establishment of a Unified Command Post at the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
He also sought a detailed assessment from the UNGRD director on the situation and immediate requirements, and said he would travel to Pereira to meet affected people and review the government’s response.
