The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting a comprehensive examination of technical, operational, medical and human factors in the Air India Phuket-Delhi flight incident, the Civil Aviation Ministry said on Tuesday.
The probe into Flight AI 2379 involves the systematic collection, preservation and assessment of all relevant evidence, including the Airbus A320 aircraft and its systems, recorded flight data, operational and maintenance records, medical information and statements from people associated with the incident.
The ministry said all available evidence would be examined in its entirety before any conclusions are reached. It also cautioned against drawing inferences from isolated or unverified information while the investigation remains underway.
Certain records, statements, medical information and other material gathered during the probe are protected and confidential under the applicable investigation framework, the ministry said, stressing that maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the process is essential for an objective and technically sound determination of facts.
The AAIB has appealed to the media and the public to respect the investigation and avoid conclusions based on incomplete, unverified or selectively available information.
The bureau will issue its preliminary findings within the stipulated timeframe in accordance with applicable provisions and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) protocols. Further information will be made public at an appropriate stage.
The incident involved Air India Airbus A320 aircraft VT-EXO, which was operating scheduled Flight AI 2379 from Phuket to Delhi when it experienced a sudden altitude variation of approximately 300 feet during cruise. The aircraft subsequently stabilised and landed safely in Delhi. Twenty passengers and four cabin crew members sustained injuries during the incident.
The investigation is aimed solely at determining the circumstances and contributing factors behind the occurrence and identifying safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
Under the international aviation investigation framework, the state of design and state of manufacture participate in investigations of such incidents. Accordingly, France’s Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses pour la sécurité de l’aviation civile (BEA), along with technical representatives of Airbus, is providing assistance to the AAIB.
The assistance includes relevant technical information and design documentation in accordance with the applicable ICAO framework, the ministry said.
