British Deputy High Commissioner Alba Smeriglio and Madhu Mishra, Senior Adviser (Economics, Climate & Development) at the British High Commission, met Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Dr Ravjot Singh at the Punjab Civil Secretariat-1 in Chandigarh on Tuesday and discussed issues concerning the Punjabi diaspora in the UK and NRIs linked to Punjab.
During the meeting, Dr Ravjot Singh said the Punjab Government was committed to maintaining regular engagement with Punjabis living abroad and addressing their genuine concerns effectively.
The Minister urged Punjabis in the UK and their families to remain cautious about fraudulent and unauthorised travel agents. He warned against individuals making false promises relating to visas, immigration, overseas travel and other associated services.
He stressed the need for greater public awareness to prevent people from falling victim to fraud and exploitation by unscrupulous agents.
Dr Ravjot Singh also informed the British delegation that the Punjab Government will organise an NRI Milni in Bathinda on August 26. The event will provide NRIs with an opportunity to interact directly with government representatives, raise their concerns and offer suggestions.
He invited Punjabis living abroad, particularly those from Bathinda and neighbouring areas, to participate in the event and place their issues before the state government.
The meeting also covered various concerns of Punjabis residing in the UK and NRIs maintaining links with Punjab, including matters relating to their continued association with the state and issues affecting their interests.
Both sides underlined the importance of strengthening communication and cooperation on matters concerning the Punjabi diaspora.
