Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said the government still had time to take up in Parliament the Opposition’s demands for discussions on the police action against NEET protesters and the alleged theft of donations made to the Ram Temple.
Speaking to reporters, Yadav said the Opposition had been seeking a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the July 20 protest since the beginning of the Monsoon Session.
“The Opposition has been demanding from the very first day that the Home Minister should make a statement and that the government should give its response. But the government is not ready. Even with only two days left, the government still has time to discuss both issues,” he said.
His remarks came hours after Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told the Lok Sabha that the government was prepared to discuss the students’ protest and that Home Minister Amit Shah would make a statement on the issue.
Yadav also sought a parliamentary discussion on the controversy surrounding the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple, saying the matter had hurt the religious sentiments of devotees who had contributed to the temple.
“It is not a normal matter that donations offered to Lord Ram have been stolen. The faith of crores of people has been hurt,” he said, questioning whether the government or BJP leaders had any involvement in the alleged theft.
The Kannauj MP also asked why the government was unwilling to allow a discussion on the issue in Parliament.
Yadav further criticised the alleged lathi-charge and police action against young people and students during the July 20 protest. He said the issue extended beyond NEET aspirants and involved students who had appeared for examinations across the country and in Uttar Pradesh, including those affected by paper leaks.
“The children, youth and students were humiliated,” he alleged, adding that the Opposition would continue to seek answers from the government on both matters.
