Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday assured the Lok Sabha that Home Minister Amit Shah would respond to the Opposition’s concerns over the students’ protest, even as persistent sloganeering disrupted proceedings and forced the House to adjourn for the day.
The Opposition has been demanding a statement from Shah over the police action against students during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20. The protest was held over the NEET paper leak and other alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, with Opposition parties alleging police “brutality” against the protesters.
The Monsoon Session entered its final week on Monday, but the issue continued to dominate proceedings.
After the House resumed, Rijiju said the government was prepared to discuss the students’ concerns and that Shah was ready to give a detailed response.
“Congress and Rahul Gandhi were demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah should give a statement. The government is ready to discuss the students’ issue and the Home Minister is ready to give a detailed reply,” Rijiju said.
He also urged the Opposition not to leave the House when the Home Minister addresses the issue, saying, “I urge the Opposition that during the Home Minister’s address, don’t be afraid and run away.”
The Opposition continued raising slogans despite repeated appeals from Jagdambika Pal, who was in the Chair, to maintain parliamentary decorum. Members also displayed placards, prompting the Chair to caution them against the practice.
Amid the uproar, Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal spoke on the Tribunal Reforms Bill, 2026. The Bill was subsequently passed amid the Opposition’s protest.
Pal questioned the Opposition’s decision to disrupt proceedings despite the government’s assurance that the Home Minister was prepared to respond.
“When the Home Minister is ready to answer, you are not ready for the discussion. When the Parliamentary Affairs Minister has assured you, then why are you creating this chaos? This means that you only come here to flash placards,” he said.
He appealed to the protesting MPs to participate in the proceedings and uphold the dignity of the House. With the disruptions continuing, the Lok Sabha was eventually adjourned for the day.
