Actress Monalisa is set to explore a complex and emotionally demanding role in Love To Hate You: Chapter 2, a show that she says offered her the opportunity to portray multiple shades of a character.
Explaining what drew her to the project, Monalisa told IANS that the role appealed to her because of its emotional depth and unpredictable circumstances.
“What I really liked about the show was that my character is not very simple. There are many emotions and situations that she goes through. I like playing characters where I can show different shades,” she said.
The actress said the story’s combination of love, betrayal, pain and twists further convinced her to take up the role.
For Monalisa, portraying an emotionally conflicted character required her to understand the reasons behind her actions rather than simply delivering the emotions on screen.
“When you are playing an emotional character, you have to understand what the person is feeling. Sometimes the character is angry, sometimes hurt and sometimes confused,” she said.
She added that she tried to keep the performances natural so that the emotions did not appear forced.
The show’s multiple layers also presented a challenge, particularly because of the family conflicts, secrets and misunderstandings woven into the story.
“As an actor, you have to remember what your character knows and what she doesn’t know. Sometimes you are playing a scene with one emotion, but inside you know there is something else happening. That makes it interesting but also difficult,” Monalisa said.
The actress revealed that some developments in the script surprised her as well, although she stopped short of disclosing details that could spoil the story for viewers.
“There were some moments where I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to happen?’ I don’t want to reveal anything because that will spoil the fun for the audience,” she said.
Monalisa believes the character’s emotional journey could connect with viewers because of its depiction of trust, misunderstandings and uncertainty in relationships.
“Everyone has faced situations where they have trusted someone and later felt hurt or confused. Sometimes we don’t know the complete truth and we react according to what we see,” she said.
Love To Hate You: Chapter 2 also marks the return of Harsh Rajput and Niyati Fatnani as Aman and Ria. The cast includes Abhimanyu Tomar, Sanjana and Monalisa.
