Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Monday, bringing relief from heat and humidity as intermittent showers over the past few days helped bring down daytime temperatures across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another spell of very light rain in Delhi on August 12 and 13, with one or two spells likely during the period. However, overall rainfall is expected to remain limited.
The weather is likely to remain predominantly cloudy through the week, with light to very light showers forecast for August 14 and 15 as well. Winds are expected to remain in the 10-15 kmph range, with their direction changing from northeast to southwest on August 12, northwest to west on August 13, westerly on August 14 and northwesterly on August 15.
Despite the rainfall, meteorologists have cautioned that humidity may remain high as temperatures are not expected to change significantly over the next seven days.
Delhi-NCR has recorded widespread rainfall since Friday, including heavy showers in several areas over the weekend. The rain has lowered daytime temperatures but also resulted in waterlogging and severe traffic congestion at several locations.
According to IMD data, August 8 was the wettest day of the month in the national capital in the past two years. By Sunday morning, Delhi had received 98.7 mm of rain in the preceding 24 hours, the highest single-day August rainfall recorded since 2024.
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was expected to settle around 34 degrees Celsius. Cloudy conditions persisted, with light to moderate rain reported at isolated locations.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate category on Monday, although readings varied considerably across monitoring stations. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 157, while Chandni Chowk recorded 88, Pusa 63, JNU 59, North Campus 287, ITO 86, IIT Delhi 93, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium 75, Patparganj 65 and Narela 79.
The readings indicated that rainfall had not resulted in uniformly clean air across the national capital, with some areas continuing to record moderate or higher pollution levels.
