Residents of Kadipora village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district pooled money on Monday to help a migrant labourer return to Jharkhand after learning that his mother had died at home.
Badal Kumar, a native of Jharkhand, was found crying outside the shrine of Sufi saint Syed Sahib in Kadipora. Locals approached him and, on learning that he was unable to travel home because he did not have enough money, decided to step in.
The residents, all Muslims, collected money to cover Kumar’s travel and other immediate expenses and arranged transport for him.
Kumar has since moved to Kapra village in Anantnag, from where he and his family are expected to travel to Jharkhand in the vehicle arranged by the local residents.
Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Kadipora, said the community could not remain indifferent to Kumar’s distress.
“All of us are human beings and our religion teaches us to have compassion for fellow human beings. Nobody could sit without his/her heart getting moved by the tragedy of the non-local labourer,” he said.
Other residents said extending help to a person facing such distress was a matter of humanity and consistent with the teachings of all religions.
The gesture comes against the backdrop of recent violence against migrant workers in Anantnag district. On July 31, two non-local brick kiln workers, Deepak and Bopinder, both in their twenties and from Chhattisgarh, were shot dead by terrorists at close range in Kellam village.
The killings had drawn condemnation from local residents, who denounced the targeting of innocent labourers.
The assistance extended to Kumar in Kadipora reflects the support shown by local residents to a migrant worker in distress and their rejection of violence against non-local workers.
