Following the alleged attack on former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bijpur in North 24 Parganas district, the Trinamool Congress has decided to organise protest rallies across West Bengal on Monday.
According to a party insider, protest marches will be held in all blocks of the state, while Trinamool MLAs who have not joined the rebel camp will stage their protest in the Assembly.
The party is seeking to intensify its campaign around Sunday’s incident and broaden its reach beyond Kolkata, where most of its recent programmes have been concentrated. District leaders have been asked to organise processions in every block after 2 p.m. on Monday.
Banerjee had visited Bijpur to meet the family of Birju Keot, the husband of former Trinamool councillor Jenny Sharma Keot, who had resigned from the Kanchrapara Municipality in North 24 Parganas. Birju Keot had been arrested in connection with allegations including extortion and died in lock-up on Saturday.
His family alleged that he was beaten to death. When Banerjee, accompanied by two Trinamool MPs, went to meet the family on Sunday afternoon, she faced protests on the way.
Banerjee alleged that BJP-backed miscreants hurled shoes, mud, bricks and stones at her vehicle. She said the attack could have caused serious injury or even death had the windows of the car been open.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, meanwhile, denied any BJP involvement in the protests. He also remarked that Mamata Banerjee should wear a headset while stepping out in public so that she would not have to hear chants of “thief”.
