Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, describing it as a victory for students who had been protesting against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the NEET paper leak controversy.
In a post on X, the Congress leader said Pradhan’s resignation was an important step towards reforming the country’s education system and congratulated students across India for what he described as a successful democratic movement.
Gandhi said the protests had demonstrated the power of collective action in defending democracy, the Constitution and the future of the country’s youth. He praised students who participated in demonstrations, saying their efforts had led to greater accountability.
However, the Congress MP said the student movement’s demands remained only partially fulfilled. He called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologise to students and the nation over the alleged failures in the examination system and demanded strict action against those responsible for the alleged use of force against protesting students.
In a video message, Gandhi said the development should encourage farmers, labourers, poor people and others whom he claimed were facing oppression to raise their voices without fear. He also launched a political attack on the Centre, alleging that the government was weakening democratic institutions and calling for a change in government.
Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister earlier on Saturday amid nationwide protests over alleged examination paper leaks and other examination-related irregularities.
