Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, describing it as a victory for the sustained campaign led by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and students protesting against alleged examination paper leaks.
In a statement, Gehlot said the resignation reflected the success of a movement demanding transparency and accountability in the country’s education system. He claimed the Central government had initially resisted calls for accountability but eventually yielded to mounting public pressure.
Gehlot also referred to Rahul Gandhi’s demand earlier in the day seeking Pradhan’s removal, saying the Congress leader’s support for students had strengthened the nationwide agitation.
The senior Congress leader criticised the government’s handling of student protests, alleging that demonstrators faced force, including the use of pellet guns and tear gas. He also alleged that Rahul Gandhi was manhandled while expressing solidarity with protesting students.
Calling the resignation a triumph of democratic values, Gehlot said the struggle for accountability was not over. He asserted that those responsible for the alleged examination irregularities must be held accountable and stressed the need to restore public confidence in the country’s education system.
Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister earlier on Saturday amid nationwide protests over alleged examination irregularities, including the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.
