Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday resigned from the Union Council of Ministers, saying the interests and future of the country’s students must remain paramount amid the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG examination.
In a resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan said he had always remained committed to students, teachers and education reforms during more than four decades of public life and expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation.
Referring to the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination held on May 3, 2026, Pradhan said the Centre had acted promptly by handing over the investigation to the CBI, cancelling the examination and announcing a fresh test. He also noted that the government had decided to conduct the examination in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from next year.
Pradhan said ensuring a fair examination for over two million candidates had remained the government’s foremost priority and credited the Centre, state governments, district administrations, students and parents for the successful conduct of the re-examination on June 21.
However, he said recent developments had deeply saddened him, alleging that certain people holding responsible positions had attempted to mislead students even after the declaration of the NEET-UG results on July 16.
Stating that India’s youth are the country’s greatest strength, Pradhan said he did not want students to remain entangled in legal disputes or political controversies and wanted them to focus on their education and careers. He said he had submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister keeping these considerations in mind.
Pradhan thanked the Prime Minister, his ministerial colleagues, officials and staff of the Education Ministry for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the nation in the future.
