A statewide Bihar Bandh called by student organisations on Saturday over the alleged NEET paper leak and other examination-related issues witnessed clashes and stone-pelting incidents at some locations, prompting police action and detention of several protesters.
Demonstrations were held in Patna and several other districts, with authorities deploying heavy security across sensitive areas to maintain law and order.
In Patna, student activists gathered at Dakbungla Crossing and raised slogans against the government. Police alleged that some protesters resorted to stone-pelting, following which security personnel used mild force to disperse the crowd.
A police officer, Sub-Inspector Pramod Kumar, suffered a head injury after being hit during stone-pelting in the Bakarganj area of the city.
Several students were detained by police after they gathered at JP Golambar as part of the shutdown programme. Security was also strengthened around Patna University, with additional forces deployed near gates, hostels and adjoining areas.
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya K. Sharma said several people had been detained for questioning. He said police were investigating the alleged involvement of protesters in stone-pelting and were also looking into how stones reached the protest sites.
The SSP added that attempts to breach police barricades were handled immediately and the overall situation remained under control.
The bandh also received political support, with Janshakti Janata Dal National President Tej Pratap Yadav briefly joining protesters at Ram Ghulam Chowk in Patna.
Protests were also reported in Siwan, Chhapra and Gaya, where students demanded action over examination paper leaks and called for the resignation of Union Education Minister.
Siwan Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha said the situation in the district remained peaceful, with adequate police deployment, reserve forces on standby and continuous patrolling being carried out.
