A 20-year-old man was killed after the car he was driving skidded off a slippery road and plunged into an open drain near southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area, police said on Saturday.
The accident occurred on Friday morning near the Nangal Dewat traffic signal when Yashvendra, who was driving the vehicle, lost control while negotiating a sharp turn. The car fell into the drain and overturned.
Police said a PCR call reporting a fatal road accident was received at Vasant Kunj South Police Station. Yashvendra and his female friend, who was travelling in the co-passenger seat, were returning from a friend’s house and heading towards her residence when the accident took place.
Yashvendra sustained serious injuries and later died during treatment. His friend survived the accident.
According to police, the car belonged to the co-passenger but was being driven by Yashvendra at the time of the incident. Both were pursuing higher education at the same institution in the United States, where they had become friends.
Preliminary findings, based on the co-passenger’s statement, indicate that the vehicle skidded due to the slippery road surface.
Following the incident, local residents alleged that the open drain has been the site of repeated accidents and accused the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) of failing to address the hazard despite repeated complaints and requests to cover the drain.
Police have initiated legal proceedings and are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident.
