The alleged mastermind behind the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) paper leak, Bijendra Gupta, has been arrested by Maharashtra Police in Bihar after evading capture for several months, officials said on Saturday.
Gupta, who is suspected to have links with multiple examination paper leak cases across the country, was arrested during an interstate operation following repeated raids at various locations in Bihar. Another accused, believed to be associated with the case, was also taken into custody during the operation.
Investigators said Gupta had remained absconding despite sustained efforts by Maharashtra Police. Earlier in the investigation, several accused, including Gupta’s wife, had been arrested in connection with the TET paper leak case.
Police believe Gupta played a key role in organising examination paper leak operations and are probing his alleged involvement in similar cases across different states.
Following his arrest, Maharashtra Police is expected to secure his transit remand and bring him to the state for further interrogation. Officials said the investigation will also focus on uncovering his alleged links with wider examination paper leak syndicates operating across the country.
The arrest comes amid the Centre’s push to tighten laws against examination malpractices. On Friday, the Union Cabinet approved a draft bill proposing stricter penalties for paper leaks, including imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines of up to ₹10 crore for organised offences under proposed amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
