US President Donald Trump has said Iran is interested in holding talks with Washington but asserted that the United States would never allow Tehran to acquire a nuclear weapon.
Speaking at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Trump said Iran was engaging with the US, though he questioned whether it was ready to reach an agreement.
“They are talking to us right now. They’d love to make a deal,” Trump said, adding, “I’m willing to listen.”
Reaffirming his administration’s position, Trump said preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remained a non-negotiable objective.
“They cannot have a nuclear weapon. We don’t want to see Washington D.C., any of our cities, Israel or the Middle East destroyed with a nuclear weapon,” he said.
Trump also claimed recent US military action had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, alleging the country had suffered heavy losses in aircraft, naval assets, radar systems and drones. However, he did not provide evidence to support the claims.
Describing the issue as a key foreign policy priority, Trump said the US remained focused on ensuring Iran never developed nuclear weapons.
The President also used the address to praise what he described as America’s renewed global standing during his second term, claiming several world leaders had told him the United States had regained international prominence.
Iran’s nuclear programme has remained a major point of contention between Tehran and Washington. While Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement during his first term, Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is intended solely for peaceful civilian purposes.
