The final rites of filmmaker Kuku Kohli were held at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai on Wednesday, with several prominent personalities from the Hindi film industry attending the funeral to pay their last respects.
Among those present were actor Vicky Kaushal, his wife Katrina Kaif, his father and stunt director Sham Kaushal, filmmaker Rohit Shetty, actors Raja Murad, Tinu Anand and Rajpal Yadav, lyricist Javed Akhtar and his wife Shabana Azmi, along with Ashoke Pandit and Gajendra Chauhan.
The celebrities maintained a solemn presence at the crematorium and left without speaking to the media. Kohli’s wife, veteran actor Aruna Irani, arrived with family members and appeared devastated by the filmmaker’s death.
Several industry colleagues also remembered Kohli on social media, including actor Ajay Devgn, whose career was launched by the filmmaker with Phool Aur Kaante in 1991.
Devgn shared a photograph of Kohli and wrote, “Some people change the course of your life forever. Kuku ji was one of those people for me. Forever grateful for the faith you had in me. You will be deeply missed, Kuku ji. Om Shanti.”
Kohli played a significant role in Devgn’s early career by casting him as the lead in Phool Aur Kaante, which marked the actor’s debut as a leading man. The 1991 film became a success, while its opening sequence featuring Devgn balancing between two moving motorcycles became one of the defining images associated with his arrival in Hindi cinema.
Kohli had been admitted to hospital two days before his death after suffering a heart attack.
He is survived by Aruna Irani and two children, Pooja and Karishma, from his first marriage to Rita Kohli. Over his career, Kohli directed several films and collaborated with numerous prominent personalities from the Hindi film industry.
