Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Tuesday dedicated irrigation projects worth ₹26.12 crore in the Sri Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency, aimed at expanding canal water access to thousands of acres of farmland and reducing dependence on groundwater.
The projects, inaugurated at village Rurki Heeran, include canal lining, restoration of minors, underground pipeline networks and lift irrigation schemes. Goyal said the Punjab Government is focusing on strengthening canal infrastructure to ensure maximum utilisation of surface water for agriculture and conserve the state’s declining groundwater resources.
The minister said ₹11.74 crore was spent on lining the 7.21-kilometre Samrala Major canal. The project will benefit 13 villages and increase canal-irrigated area from 2,516 acres to 3,333 acres, bringing an additional 817 acres under irrigation.
He added that the 3.35-kilometre Amarala Minor was restored at a cost of ₹2.01 crore. The work will benefit four villages and expand canal irrigation coverage from 1,519 acres to 2,223 acres, adding 704 acres to the irrigated area.
Goyal further said two underground pipeline systems covering 10.76 kilometres were laid at a cost of ₹8.95 crore to provide efficient water delivery directly to farmers’ fields. The pipelines will benefit nine villages and increase assured canal irrigation coverage from 1,698 acres to 2,295 acres.
The minister also informed that lift irrigation schemes have been established in Jhallian, Kheri Salabatpur, Dhaularan and Bhojemajra villages along the Sirhind Canal at a cost of ₹3.42 crore. These schemes will provide irrigation facilities to 965 acres of agricultural land.
Besides these projects, 40 temporary outlets (Moghas) have been constructed in the constituency, benefiting farmers of 17 villages, including Pathreri Jattan, Balsandha, Simbal Jhallian, Amarali, Ramgarh, Oind, Luthedi, Rurki, Ballan, Chuharmajra, Barsalpur, Kotli, Majri, Saidpur, Chaklan and Kalemajra.
Goyal said canal-irrigated area in these villages has increased from 3,217 acres in 2022 to 4,518 acres after canal restoration, construction of Moghas and installation of underground pipelines, bringing an additional 1,301 acres under irrigation.
He said earlier lift irrigation projects worth nearly ₹44 crore had already been completed in the Sri Chamkaur Sahib constituency, extending canal water facilities to 21 villages.
The minister said the government’s focus is to increase canal water availability, reduce farmers’ dependence on tubewells and preserve groundwater. He added that canal desilting, repairs, lining works, new outlets and underground pipeline projects are being undertaken across Punjab to strengthen the irrigation network.
Sri Chamkaur Sahib MLA Dr. Charanjit Singh thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Barinder Kumar Goyal for the projects, saying the initiatives would benefit farmers by reducing irrigation costs, improving agricultural productivity and supporting groundwater conservation.
