President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at ‘Sadaiv Atal’ in New Delhi on his death anniversary.
The dignitaries also attended a prayer meeting held in memory of the former Prime Minister.
Former President Ram Nath Kovind, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and BJP president Nitin Nabin were among those who paid their respects to Vajpayee.
Vajpayee, born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was a statesman, poet and writer. He served as Prime Minister on three occasions — briefly for 13 days in 1996, for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and for a full term from 1999 to 2004.
He died on August 16, 2018, at AIIMS, New Delhi.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Vajpayee in a post on X, recalling his vision, leadership and contribution to public life.
“Remembering Atal Ji on his Punya Tithi. An extraordinary statesman blessed with remarkable vision, he dedicated his life to the service of our nation. His words and efforts inspired generations and his leadership strengthened our nation. His focus on good governance and public welfare will always continue to guide us,” Modi said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also remembered Vajpayee, describing the former Prime Minister and BJP founder as a patriot who devoted his life to the nation.
Shah highlighted Vajpayee’s role in projecting India’s strength through the nuclear tests and the Kargil War, while also crediting his value-based politics with advancing the ideals of Antyodaya and good governance.
He said Vajpayee’s personality and leadership would continue to inspire BJP workers in nation-building.
