Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday wrote to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, urging him to personally meet representatives of protesting students and take appropriate steps to resolve their concerns over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.
The students’ agitation in Jharkhand entered its 24th day on Monday, with protesters demanding action over alleged irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). A fourth round of talks between government representatives and the students was scheduled for Monday.
In his letter, Gandhi said the Congress supports the constitutional right to peaceful protest and has backed students protesting against paper leaks and irregularities in the education system.
“The Congress party believes that the right to peaceful protest as enshrined in the Constitution of India is one of the central pillars of our democracy,” he said.
Referring to the ongoing demonstration at Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, Gandhi welcomed the state government’s decision to initiate dialogue through a committee constituted by Soren.
“I appreciate that the Jharkhand government has begun a dialogue with them through a committee instituted by you. I believe that there is also agreement on several demands raised by the students,” he said.
However, Gandhi noted that the agitation was continuing and that some students remained on an indefinite hunger strike.
“I am writing to suggest that you personally meet with representatives of the protesting students. This will help reinforce the government’s commitment to resolve their remaining concerns,” he said.
Gandhi also emphasised the importance of addressing the concerns of young people, saying India’s youth were its future.
“We owe them our solidarity and support at this moment of crisis. Please do your utmost to hear them out and take appropriate action towards the resolution of this issue,” he added.
The protesting students have been demanding strict action over alleged examination irregularities and have also announced plans to gherao the Chief Minister’s residence on August 20.
