The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received a boost to its organisational strength in Punjab on Sunday as around 250 members of the Garhwal community, including office-bearers and active members of Garhwal Sabhas in Kharar, Mohali and Dera Bassi, joined the party.
The new entrants, who came from various political outfits, were formally inducted at the BJP’s state headquarters in Chandigarh by Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon. He welcomed them into the party by presenting traditional party patkas.
Addressing the gathering, Dhillon said the BJP’s organisational base was expanding across Punjab and claimed that people were increasingly viewing the party as a credible political alternative.
“People of Punjab have already experienced the governance models of the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal. They have now made up their minds to give the BJP an opportunity to serve the state. The pro-people and inclusive policies of the Central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are gaining widespread support across all sections of society,” he said.
Dhillon assured the newly inducted members that their contribution would be recognised and that they would be given due respect and organisational responsibilities within the party.
Among those joining the BJP were Suresh Shastri, president of Kharar Garhwal Sabha; Gabbar Singh, president of Naya Gaon Garhwal Sabha; Ganesh Barthwal, vice-president; and Indramani, president of Dera Bassi Garhwal Sabha, besides nearly 250 other active members of the community.
The new members said they were inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of development, strong governance and a progressive India.
The induction programme was attended by BJP state vice-presidents Ranjit Singh Gill and Dr Subhash Sharma, district president Sanjeev Vashisht, BJP Media Cell co-convener Advocate M.K. Verma and other party functionaries and workers.
