Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Council member Sri Chand Vohra has been arrested by Delhi Police from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh in connection with an alleged attempt to take possession of a property belonging to a Dalit worker of the party in Jaitpur Extension, south-east Delhi, police sources said on Monday.
Vohra, the husband of AAP councillor from Jaitpur Hema Vohra, was named in a complaint filed by party worker Rakesh Kumar, who alleged that he had been dispossessed of his property.
According to the complaint, around three weeks ago, Vohra allegedly removed belongings kept by Kumar on the first floor of the property and threw them onto the street.
Following its investigation, police added penal provisions relating to an alleged conspiracy to take possession of the plot. The sections invoked in the case carry a maximum punishment of 10 years.
The case has also triggered a political confrontation between the BJP and AAP. The Delhi BJP had earlier questioned the silence of AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Saurabh Bharadwaj over the alleged harassment of Kumar, who is a Dalit worker of the party.
Delhi BJP Media Head and spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor condemned the alleged treatment of Kumar and called for prompt police action against Vohra. Kapoor, along with BJP Chief Spokesperson Anil Gupta, also urged Kejriwal to ensure restoration of Kumar’s possession of the plot and demanded that Vohra and his wife be expelled from the AAP.
Kapoor said Vohra had been associated with Kejriwal since the formative years of the AAP and had contested the Municipal Corporation election from Jaitpur in 2017. Hema Vohra contested the election in 2022 and is currently a municipal councillor.
According to the BJP leaders, Vohra allegedly took possession of Kumar’s vacant plot in Jaitpur Extension in 2019 on the pretext of establishing a private political office. They said Kumar began seeking the return of his property about a year later, but alleged that Vohra continued to delay the matter until 2022.
The BJP leaders further alleged that after Hema Vohra was elected councillor from Jaitpur towards the end of 2022, Kumar faced further harassment. According to them, the alleged harassment continued until an FIR was registered at a police station around two weeks ago.
The allegations made by the BJP and Kumar form part of the ongoing case against Vohra.
