Veteran actress and BJP MP Hema Malini has praised Sunny Deol-starrer period drama Batwara 1947, lauding its message of humanity, mutual respect and harmony over hatred and division.
Taking to X on Monday, Hema Malini said she had watched the film and described its central message as particularly relevant to the country today. She expressed hope that the film would encourage audiences to reconsider their attitudes and choose kindness over hatred.
“I watched the movie ‘Batwara’ yday. Simply brilliant with a clear message that conveys what the nation needs today. It reminds us that humanity, mutual respect, and harmony are far more important than hatred and division. I hope this beautiful message inspires people to change their mindset and choose kindness over hate,” she wrote.
Hema also praised the performances of Sunny Deol and Shabana Azmi, besides acknowledging Karan Deol and Preity Zinta for their work in the film.
Calling Rajkumar Santoshi’s direction “brilliant”, she congratulated producer Aamir Khan for backing what she described as a timeless film with a message that is “truly the need of the hour”.
Batwara 1947 also features Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapur, Waseem Rajput and Isha Sandhir in significant roles.
Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India, the film is said to draw inspiration from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, whose title is based on a popular Punjabi expression highlighting Lahore’s cultural significance.
The film was released on August 14 during the Independence Day weekend and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
